Discussion Lists for Stop the Cuts

What are discussion lists?

Email-based discussion lists allow you to write the entire membership of Stop The Cuts or just the members of particular working groups.

Instead of cc'ing a bunch of email addresses, you just email one address, and all the people "subscribed" to the discussion list will get it, and be able to carry on a conversation with the group by replying to the same email. This is useful because not everyone in Stop the Cuts is on Facebook but almost all of us use email.

To send email to a group you must yourself be "subscribed" to the email list. Instructions for getting on lists are below.

If you need to get ahold of someone really quickly, Facebook or text is better for quick "chat-like" discussion. You can get a bit longer and more deliberative in a discussion group.

If you want to set up a discussion list please email info@stopthecutssk.ca and we'll get you connected. We recommend Google Groups and Mobilize.io for discussion list platforms.

Basic rules

Our discussion lists are governed by general "safer spaces" norms. We ask that people interact respectfully, even when they disagree. Our lists are also anti-harassment spaces. Please alert info@stopthecutsSK.ca if you are having problems with anyone on the list discussion—we will take action.

You can also remove yourself from the list at any time. Send an email to:

Receiving messages

Check your junk mail for messages when you are first on the list.

Gmail users: If you use Gmail, be sure to check your "Forums" tab for messages (Gmail automatically sorts them there):

If you would like future messages to be delivered to your Gmail 'primary' or 'updates' tab, drag the message subject to that tab.

The subject line of email messages from the group begins with [stop-the-cuts-yxe] (even though people from other cities besides YXE are on the list).

How to keep the Stop the Cuts Discussion List a better communications tool

New topic? Please start a new email thread.

If you start a new topic in the conversation, don't just reply to the existing thread. Please start a new thread with a new subject line, by emailing stop-the-cuts-yxe@groups.google.com. This will make your thoughts easier to locate later.

Does your message only need to be read by a few people?

If only a few people need to work out details about something, send email just among yourselves. That will cut down on a lot of list traffic, and extra email not everyone needs to see.

New topic? Please start a new discussion thread.
